- Executive Summary
Prokritijatra stands as the largest and most significant environmental awareness campaign in the history of Rotary Bangladesh. Initiated by the Rotary Club of Eco Dhaka, this 100-day journey was designed to inspire, educate, and mobilize citizens toward the protection of biodiversity, water resources, and sustainable living. By connecting grassroots communities with global environmental goals, Prokritijatra has redefined Rotary’s role as a leader in environmental advocacy in the region.
- Background and Rationale
Bangladesh is one of the most climate-vulnerable nations in the world. Rapid urbanization, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity pose existential threats. Prokritijatra was conceived to bridge the gap between policy and grassroots action, taking the message of “Nature Conservation” directly to the people, district by district, community by community.
- Core Activities & Signature Initiatives
Throughout the 64-district journey, the team executed several high-impact activities:
- Environmental Rallies & Seminars: In every single district, tree plantation was preceded by educational seminars and rallies. These sessions engaged hundreds of thousands of students from primary schools to universities.
- “Poricchonnotar Khela” (The Cleaning Game): Inspired by the Japanese SpoGOMI games, this unique initiative was organized in various districts. It turned waste collection into a competitive sport for students, fostering a sense of responsibility toward urban cleanliness.
- Afforestation & Sapling Distribution: While tree plantation was mandatory in all 64 districts, the campaign also distributed saplings to local communities to encourage household-level greening.
- Grassroots Dialogues: Meaningful conversations were held with farmers, fishermen, and laborers to promote safe, natural farming practices and the protection of soil, water, and air.
- Cultural Advocacy: In divisional headquarters, the campaign showcased local folk culture and staged the climate-action play to communicate environmental urgency through the arts.
4. Impact and Outreach: Bridging Hearts and Minds
The success of Prokritijatra is measured by its unprecedented reach, combining deep personal engagement with broad-based media advocacy.
- Direct Grassroots Engagement: The campaign achieved a significant milestone by directly interacting with over 500,000 individuals. This includes face-to-face engagements with students at seminars, hands-on participation with farmers in natural farming dialogues, and collaborative cleaning drives with local youth. This “human-to-human” approach ensured that the message of conservation was not just heard but felt.
- Indirect Reach & Media Advocacy: Beyond direct contact, the campaign resonated across the nation through an intensive communication strategy. By leveraging local and national newspapers, television channels, and social media platforms across all 64 districts, Prokritijatra reached an estimated 10 million people indirectly.
- Public Commitments: Among the hundreds of thousands of students engaged, a vast majority took a formal Environmental Pledge, promising to act as lifelong guardians of nature. This has created a massive, decentralized network of “Green Ambassadors” throughout Bangladesh.
- Unified Rotary Branding: The journey significantly boosted the visibility of Rotary as a service-driven movement. It successfully portrayed Rotary not just as a club for professionals, but as a frontline force for environmental and social transformation in Bangladesh.
